Simple Precautions When You Are Outdoors
Please stay on the trails and dress for the weather: light, loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, a hat and sturdy shoes. Watch out for poison ivy. Do NOT eat any wild fruits, mushrooms or berries. The Oxbow Meadows Environmental Park is built on a former landfill. Stay hydrated! The best time to come to see wildlife is early in the morning - when it is not so hot. We have a water fountain and we sell cold beverages. Protect your skin with sun screen. Wear sunglasses. Use mosquito repellent if you plan to walk the trails. You are less likely to pick up ticks and chiggers if you stay on the trails. You will also see spiders - most are harmless - so please do not kill them. In addition to biting critters, water moccasins and alligators have been spotted down by our lake. Rattlesnakes have been spotted sunning themselves near the Center building. These animals would rather flee than bite you. Just stay on the trails and watch where you walk.
Guidelines for Visitors This is a wildlife sanctuary - so please leave your pets at home. No smoking, alcoholic beverages, hunting, fires, fishing, boating, camping, littering, running... you get the idea. We cannot accept injured and orphaned wildlife. Please contact the Georgia DNR at 770.918.6416. Picnicking is allowed only in the area by the visitor parking lot. Please pack out your garbage.
You may notice colored flags, markers and grids in areas where we are conducting scientific studies. Please do not disturb them.
