Project Partners
- Project funded by: MeadWestvaco (Phenix City, Alabama)
- Project planned & coordinated by: Egret Communications (Springfield, Missouri) – this company has worked on canopy access education and tourism projects in both temperate and tropical environments
- Walkway designed & constructed by: Greenheart Conservation (Vancouver, British Columbia) – this company has built several canopy walkways around the world (in Peru, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ghana, Malaysia & the Philippines) and has featured in major publications, including National Geographic
Design specifications
- Length: 192 feet (58.6 meters)
- Height: 35 feet (10.6 meters)
- Trail components: suspended walkways linking two platforms (around trees) and a tower
Uniqueness
- There are only about 100 canopy walkways worldwide, but few of them are accessible to the public. Oxbow’s TreeTop Trail is one of only 3 canopy experiences in the eastern U.S. that provide access to the public.
- Oxbow’s TreeTop Trail is a unique system of suspension-type trail segments that are attached to two stable tree platforms and a tower. The platforms are attached to the trees with a patented tree-friendly design – there is no penetration into the tree and the platform attachments allow for tree movement and growth. It is the first trail of its kind built in the U.S.
- Oxbow’s trail does not require technical training or equipment.
Trail uses
- Education & interpretation (guided tours for school students & the public)
- Research (college students and faculty)
- Recreation (bird watching, nature photography)
